French : Anais, une jeune veuve de vingt-sept ans, vit cloîtrée dans son palais vénitien avec pour seule et austère compagnie sa belle-mère, Pénélope, veuve elle aussi. Rien ni personne ne parvient à les dérider. Charitable, Emmanuelle vole à leur secours. Elle s'occupe d'abord d'Anaïs et sait trouver des arguments assez convaincants pour la jeter dans les bras de la belle Maria. Au petit matin, bourrelée de remords, Anaïs a repris son masque d'inhumanité. Emmanuelle, une nouvelle fois, triomphe de sa froideur. Anaïs et Maria s'envolent pour Paris. Reste Pénélope, atterrée par la nouvelle qui vient de lui parvenir, concernant la mort du seul homme qu'elle ait jamais aimé. Excellente occasion, pense Emmanuelle, pour aller vérifier ailleurs si la liste est définitivement close...
